This week’s Gospel contains an account of the final miracle, the last sign that Jesus does in John’s narrative. It’s a mirror of the first sign, at the Wedding in Cana. Jesus is providing abundant food, wine and bread to all of us, and that is the great sign that the Messiah is present, and the new realm of God has begun.

And here’s the thing, on the other side of Easter, we are restored and forgiven, not because we asked to be, but because Jesus has made it so. We are gathered, like fish in a net, into the Kingdom of God.

This is not a Kingdom that we earn or deserve, it is a Kingdom that features a relationship that God initiates with us and to which we respond but don’t really. know how to seek.
