Easter is the day that the arc of history changed, not metaphorically, but observably!

Sermons and audio

Three daffodils in bloomIf Easter shouldn’t be reduced to a celebration of Spring, then what is it for us? We celebrate it every year, we talk about Jesus rising from the dead every year, and the way our church services work; it feels like he is rising each year – especially as we switch from the somber and disciplined observance of Lent, into the pathos of Holy Week and come to the exuberant Joy of Easter Day and the 50 great days of Easter Season.

If it’s not an annual celebration of spring and new life, then what?

Easter is the moment when human history changes. What it is to be human changes. How we live in community changes.

And I don’t mean that metaphorically, or theologically. I mean that historically and, in a nuts and bolts, observable sort of way.

Everything is now different, more so today than it was in Jesus’ day – just as the Apostles told us it was going to be. The Easter transformation has been happening for centuries, for thousands of years, changing society and changing how we think about each other. It’s been spreading across the globe like an idea, changing human society.
