Understanding Epiphany: Signs of God in Science and Faith | Lucas’s Weblog:
[T]he story of the Magi praises curiosity and diligence, two virtues essential to good science. Epiphany captures the unified joy of Ordained Scientists, who witness to a God that speaks to us in multiple ways. The truth cannot be confined to secular or sacred realms. Ultimately the two cannot be separated or set at odds. Our ways of knowing are different – and may, indeed, lead to different conclusions – but there is only one truth, the goal of both science and theology. It is an ideal and a hope, but an important one. The truth is too big for anyone to claim ownership. And so we must live with eyes open, search for signs, and follow them where they lead.
[…] Epiphany is a time of convergence. A time for appreciating the multitude of signs, large and small, that come together to tell us something about the world we live in. In this case they tell us that God is with us. Like a fractal, the signs appear at every scale, from cosmic to microscopic, with examples everywhere in between. They are visible not only at each individual level, but in comparing them one to another. Stars and crosses all the way down (and all the way up).
As is typical, Lucas writes a meditation that I’m blessed to have read. There’s more at the link.
For my part, I’ll just wish all of you a blessed Feast of the Epiphany. May God be manifest to you in miracle of Creation and in the everyday miracles of our lives.
