I begin the sermon this week with a plea that you would join me in prayer for those in the Los Angeles area who are seeing their community be destroyed by raging wind and fire. I’m sure that you, like me, know many people who live there, who are in danger now or who have suffered devastating loss. It is not over yet, and it’s going to be long road back. But we will keep you in our prayers as long as it takes, just as we are mobilizing to assist you in so many ways as recovery begins.
This season of Epiphany (Theophany) is the time that we remember that there is a greater reality surrounding us than we can typically perceive. There is a cosmic drama playing out in the everyday events of our lives. And in the lives of everyone we come into contact with. The people you stand in line with at the store are lit from within by the fire of God’s love. Someday we shall all see it, but for now, just remembering that fact might be enough to change how we treat our neighbor today.
