If you want to know which way you’re headed, look to see where your heart is set.

Blooming bush with large white flowersThere are seasons when poverty, or illness, or oppression — whether material or spiritual — hem us in so tightly that we can’t see where we’re going. It’s like walking through a forest so thick we can’t see the sky.

And there are other seasons when we have so many options, so much abundance, that we’re adrift — like being at sea with no land in sight. We can see everything, but nothing stands out. Nothing tells us which way to go.

The truth is — whether we’re pressed down by scarcity, or drowning in excess — the danger is the same: We lose our way.

And that’s when Jesus says — “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

He’s giving us a compass.

If you want to know which way you’re headed… …look to see where your heart is set.

If our hearts are set on our possessions, then we will spend our lives orbiting that empty center — trying to fill a hole that can’t be filled.

If our hearts are set on heaven, then we have something to steer by — no matter the forest or the ocean that surrounds us.
