The Gentle Guidance of the Holy Spirit

Pink Rhododendron blooms

Why is the doctrine of the Trinity important to us today? Is it more than just a relic of long, complicated conversations that the earlier Church had as it tried to make sense of its experience of One God who was known to us in three persons… which created quite a difficult paradox, it turns out.

Well, I suggest we begin by looking carefully at this week’s Gospel reading first, and then working ourselves out from that to what the Trinity means today.

Consider for a moment the patient, gentle guidance of the Holy Spirit. In this passage, Jesus acknowledges the disciples’ current limitations, emphasizing God’s patience as the Spirit reveals truth gradually. This is the context in which the Holy Spirit begins the work of creating community, creating the Beloved Community of the Church, the Body of Christ in the World.

This is a reminder of divine grace in God’s relational approach with humanity.
The relationship that we experience with the Holy Spirit, and that the Holy Spirit has with the other persons of the Trinity, becomes a key to unlocking the way we should be in relationship with each other.
