The moment the Empire sat in the presence of the King

Sermons and audio

Christ In Front Of Pilate. This week the liturgical season of Pentecost comes to an end with what is often referred to as Christ the King Sunday. We draw our readings of what the events of Easter and Pentecost have meant to the World to a close and we will make the turn next week to peering into the future as we begin Advent.

The Gospel this week presents an extraordinary moment in the Passion narrative as Jesus, the Logos, the King of All Creation stands before Pilate, the governor of a midling part of the Roman Empire, a man granted a limited measure of authority in that place and time. Jesus asks Pilate a question and in so doing turns the tables and by his example shows us how we might navigate similar moments of conflict between Church and State in our day.
