This week’s sermon, on the Gospel in which Jesus identifies himself as the True Bread, that which the Manna pointed towards, is preached on a special occasion and place. This year is the 350th anniversary of the founding of Town of North Kingstown RI, and I am preaching at Old Narragansett Church in the town, the oldest church building (1704) in the State of Rhode Island.
The lessons for this weekend follow St. John’s account last week describing how Jesus fed the multitude in the wilderness and then immediately afterwards, demonstrated his mastery over the chaotic forces of Creation. Both the feeding and the miracle of walking on the waves are signs that point to who he is and what he is accomplishing in his earthly ministry among us.
