Proper 18C 2010, The Proper Lens for Scripture

Today's Gospel reading began with the arresting statement by Jesus that whoever does not hate their family members can not be his disciple.
But that apparently puts Jesus in conflict with the 5th Commandment and much of the First Letter of John (among other things). How can we make sense of contradictions in scripture?
Learning to do so means we have to find a consistent way to interpret what we read in Holy Scripture, we need a hermeneutic stance.
In this sermon I want to suggest that the most appropriate one for us to use is to read all scripture as if we were viewing it through the lens of the saving events of the Triduum.
