What does it mean to be a prophet? The lectionary texts take us to the call of the "Weeping Prophet" – Jeremiah. At the time of his call, Israel was in a time of peace and prosperity, but God had told Jeremiah to speak out about the trials that would soon come. No one really paid much attention to the prophet. But Jeremiah spoke the truth, and, in fact, history showed there would soon be a geopolitical struggle, with the nation breaking down and its leadership taken into captivity in Babylon. So we see in the story of Jeremiah a lived-out example, an archetype, of prophetic ministry. With this in mind, how then do we recognize a prophet in our midst? And what do we (or should we) do with them when they arise among us?
