Sermon for the First Sunday in Epiphany

Sermons and audio

Following on the heels of our celebration of the Feast of Epiphany, we come in our lectionary readings to Jesus' Baptism in the river Jordan, the first of the stories in this season of Light where we encounter ways Jesus' reveals himself to us. It's fitting, then, that in today's Gospel lesson, each Person of the Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – is revealed. When examining the Baptism of Christ in the context of other stories and themes in this Epiphany season, we realize that our experience of the numinous in our human existence comes to us in sacramental times and devices, where things we see everyday are infused with layers of new meaning. How can our recollection of these "thin places", where we are near the holy, strengthen us to live more fully into our Christian calling?
