Sermon for Proper 27b 2006

Sermons and audio

After criticizing the powerful religious rulers of his day for their self-aggrandizing prayers and stealing the inheritance of widows, Jesus offers a parable in today's lessons about a woman, a widow, who puts in all she has – two copper coins. We see the faith of one who is marginalized contrasting with the rich who, in an ostentatious display, give just a small portion of their wealth. In the midst of this spectacle we get just a glimpse of a quiet and much more meaningful gift. Yes, we hear the lesson that we must give to God, but what is the surprising message about the Kingdom of God that comes to us in these words?
