Sermon for Proper 19B 2009

What does it mean to have Jesus tell us that "if we want to be his disciples, we will have to pick up our crosses and follow him"?
Oddly enough the commentaries are all over the place about the meaning. So too are many of the ancient authorities. Is there someway though that we might make sense of this hard saying for us today?
